The stars shine down
Showing me the path

Who cares!

The Concentric Circles

Its 0340 hrs now and many things are coming to my mind. A few days back, I spoke with a friend of mine. Well, I call him my GURUDEV, cos he has helped me a lot in certain aspects (and now on certain personal matters also).I won’t mention his name publicly, but few close friends of mine might know this great person. The most dismal fact is that despite being extraordinarily bright and 100 times sincerer than me, is made to work, or rather say slog very badly, and this has effected his personal life and now is having a deep impact on his health also. It’s a new phase in our lives and we are not aware of how to tackle such kind of issues.

There is a famous theory proposed by Mr. Stephen R. Covey in his best seller: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It talks about the circle of influence and the circle of control. The circle of influence encompasses all those events which have an effect on your life, one way or the other, and the circle of control comprises of the issues on which you have a control on. To elucidate on this point, take an example of an earthquake or a natural calamity, it is in my circle of influence, as it has a direct/indirect impact on me but it is not in my control, whereas, my daily routine, my thoughts are in my control, so it falls in my circle of control. Naturally, the circle of control is a subset of my circle of influence.

So is this point pertinent in the current situation in which my dear friend is in? One can control things and make them happen rather than waiting for them to happen, if the circle of control is large enough. But how to make things come under your circle of control is a challenge, or how can you increase your circle of control? I find it extremely difficult to help my friend in this regard, but still there must be a way out. This simply does not apply to the situation in which GURUDEV is right now, but many personal issues which all of us are currently facing.

I keep on hearing these lines, around 5 times a day, from a song in the Rocky series:

“So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive”

These lines befit any situation, well atleast they do in my case. You must fight, make things under your control, to realize the dreams of the past.

America’s Loss & the world gains!

Things change, may be one way or the other, and this dynamic world is the live example of a roller coaster ride which is continuously falling in an abyss. Well from the title, many of us could have guessed what the contents are about. My voice may contain nuance of a professional with high ambitions, a job seeker in today’s recessionary world or even a Harvard student whose placement offer is turned down by Bank of America.

I still remember the powerful and elusive words of Mr. Barrack Hussein Obama amidst the nerve wrecking cold, he described The United States as a land of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and non-believers. One may conclude that the American population is primarily composed of immigrants, please correct me if I am wrong. Now, I am baffled by the terms and conditions offered by Mr. Obama’s government for the companies availing the bail out package. Well Mr. President your government may be constituted of highly intellectual people with extraordinary IQ, but the approach you are following is highly parochial. Hey, but won't it save the jobs of Americans, indeed its a great idea, why should the Americans only loose even though this tornado originated in The States! I am confused, on one hand America is embracing its diversity and its ethnic culture, and on the other it’s curtailing people of different origin to work there.

I came to know an important finding while perusing the weekend newspaper, it was about the relationship between the immigrant population and the economic growth. The study was proposed by Stanford students (I guess it was Stanford only), and it says that for every 1% rise in the immigrant population there is a 6% increase in the no. of patents, papers and other research journals. The royalties and income generated by it are quite significant, but who cares, at least the American jobs are safe, let the economy remain strangulated. People will readily move to their home country and soon there will be a huge pool of intellectuals working in their nation and directly contributing to the economy with their skills. The entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and innovators, the main reasons for the American supremacy, are of foreign origin. Sergey Brin hails from Russia and he along with Larry Page and the Stanford Professor Rajeev Motwani (doesn’t sound American) gave birth to Google. Sooner or later, we will see the Eastern world to give birth to their Microsoft/ Google and this is happening, and is happening right now. The world will rise and there will be no looking back, we are on a crest of a transition wave, and the West at its trough.
